Mullen sees risk in Obama’s Afghanistan plan - Navy News News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Navy Times
"Obama’s plan will leave 68,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after the drawdown. Most of those troops would gradually come home over the next two years, and the U.S. plans to close out its combat role in Afghanistan by 2015.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton tacitly acknowledged the military had wanted more troops to remain for a longer period of time. And she said the keys to finally ending the conflict will be political negotiations with the Taliban leadership and managing a highly contentious relationship with Pakistan."

For Immediate Release - the start of the start!
The Navy League of the United States, Twin Cities Council announces the Keel Authentication Ceremony for the future USS Minnesota SSN 783!
On Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12:00 noon the Keel Authentication Ceremony will take place at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Newport News, VA www.huntingtoningalls.com.
- In July 2008, the United States Navy announced that our state would be honored by having a warship named ‘Minnesota.’ Not since 1922 have we had a US Navy warship named after our state.
- Officially known as Precommissioning Unit (PCU) Minnesota, the Virginia-class fast attack submarine will receive its ‘USS’ designator once commissioned (estimated in June 2013).
- The Keel Authentication Ceremony is a time-honored tradition that includes having the signature of the Ships Sponsor welded into the keel of this ship. The Sponsor then announces that ‘the keel is truly and fairly laid.’
- This ceremony marks the first in three major milestones of bringing PCU Minnesota to the fleet.
- PCU Minnesota is being built in the same shipyard as the previous two USS Minnesota’s, and just five miles from one of the most famous naval battles in history that prominently featured the first USS Minnesota in the Civil War (the famed ‘Minnesota’ connection we see in many news stories).
- Please visit the new website www.ussminnesotassn783.com (the commissioning committee website) for additional information.
- Attending the ceremony from the Twin Cities Council:
- Dave Hutton, USN Ret., President, Twin Cities Council, and Co-Chair of USS Minnesota Commissioning Committee (USMCC)
- Brian Skon, Vice President, Twin Cities Council, Vice Chair USMCC
- Mike Alteri, USN Ret., Board of Directors, Twin Cities Council and member USMCC
- Jim Sillman, USN Ret., member Navy League and USMCC
- Please contact President Dave Hutton (hutton@commandstrategies.com) or Vice President Brian Skon (bdskon@fedex.com) if you have additional questions

Navy celebrates century of aviation with historic paint jobs
http://hamptonroads.com.nyud.net/2011/04/navy-celebrates-century-aviation-historic-paint-jobs
A fresh coat of history
Navy aircraft aren’t exactly known for their fashionable colors. But this year, to celebrate the century-long union of Navy ships and aircraft, squadrons across the country have traded their drab paint for something a bit splashier. Each participating squadron has painted one of its aircraft in a pattern inspired by a historic plane or helicopter. Here’s a look at some of the fancy warbirds and their famous forbears.

HMS Caroline may yet be saved - last survivor of Jutland
http://www.military-times.co.uk/articles/hms-caroline-may-be-saved.htm
When it was announced in the March issue of Military Times that the decommissioned light-cruiser HMS Caroline was going to be scrapped and turned into razorblades, there was an understandable call to arms. Read Dominic Tweedle’s original article here
But now, thanks to the hard work of, among others, Dr Dominic Tweddle, Director-General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, the museum’s Board of Trustees has resolved to accept the day-to-day responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the otherwise doomed vessel.

Navy suspends command's ship-repair oversight
The Navy has suspended the oversight authority of the local command responsible for supervising ship repairs done by private contractors.
The command, called Norfolk Ship Support Activity, has headquarters at Norfolk Naval Station. Staffed by both sailors and civilians, it oversees all maintenance work done by private companies on Navy surface ships in the mid-Atlantic region.
By suspending the command's oversight authority - formally known as its "technical warrant" - the Navy essentially is saying it no longer trusts Norfolk Ship Support Activity to make sure work by contractors is being done properly.

Happy 111th Birthday, U.S. Submarine Force!
Like a prairie dog peeking from its burrow, John P. Holland, arguably the father of the modern submarine, looks up from the conning tower of his invention after its construction in
1897.
In 1900, this boat, the sixth he built, was purchased by the U.S. government and became the USS Holland (SS-1), the first submarine in the United States Navy. Mr. Holland designed and built the sub to his own specifications and at his own expense, and became known at "The Father of the Modern Submarine". Circa 1900.
